A State of Disrepair in Havana - a photo on Flickriver

            One doesn't have to look too far in 'Habana Vieja' (Old Havana, Cuba) to see the deplorable condition of its once beautiful old colonial-era architecture.  Though limited restoration is currently underway (particularly in areas most-frequented by tourists) many of these buildings look particularly perilous. This apartment has gaping holes where chunks of brick and plaster have fallen away. A door has been left to rot where it has fallen off its hinges and metal rods protrude where verandas used to be.  Seven out of every ten homes need major repair work with most Cubans lacking the funds to maintain them.  Some 7% of housing in Havana has been declared uninhabitable.

The Cuban government recently began offering its citizens grants ranging from 5,000 Cuban pesos ($208) for making minor repairs to a maximum of 80,000 pesos ($3,333) to build a 25 sq. ft. room from scratch.  And, while Cubans wait for their grant petitions to be approved, it is said that three houses collapse either partially or completely every single day.
