'Portrait of a Baby' by Gustav Klimt

            Six months before his rather sudden death Austrian artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) painted 'The Baby'.  All that can be seen of the infant are the head and right arm emerging from the top of what appears to be a vast heap of brightly colored fabrics, which conceal the rest of the body.  The painting's true subject thus becomes the colorful decorative coverlet, out of which Klimt created a fantastic ornamental pyramid.  The painting holds Klimt's classic mosaic style of color, while exploring a portrait in a new form.

This Klimt original portrait was seen and photographed on display at San Francisco's 'Palace of the Legion of Honor'.
