Strawberry-Arbute Tree, #2 (Arbutus unedo)

            The fruit of the "Strawberry-Arbute Tree", when ripened, is a red edible berry with a rough surface.  Many people find it bland and mealy but I found it to be sweet and pleasant tasting.  The name "unedo" is explained by Pliny the Elder as being derived from "unum edo"..."I eat one", which may seem an apt response to the flavor.  They mainly serve as a source of food for birds and wildlife but in some countries are used to make jam and liqueurs like the Portuguese 'medronho', a kind of strong brandy.
