'El Lobo', Asleep On The Trail - a photo on Flickriver

            The Mexican Gray Wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) has an excellent sense of smell, keen vision and sharp hearing....unless they're fast asleep on the trail.  They live and hunt in packs, working together as that they can take out prey much larger than themselves.  This highly intelligent and socially complex carnivore, is the most endangered wolf subspecies in the world. Native to the mountainous woodlands of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, this rare canine suffered habitat loss and other human impacts so great that it has been effectively absent from the American landscape for more than half a century.

This Gray Wolf, called "Garcia", was seen and photographed peacefully slumbering in its spacious habitat at the San Francisco Zoo.  In early May of 2021, it was reported that Garcia had passed away at the advanced age of 15.  Mexican gray wolves typically live up to 13 years in the wild and up to 15 years in captivity.  Garcia was one of three male siblings who, at the age of 11, were brought to the San Francisco zoo in 2016 as part of a conservation effort.  Once abundant throughout Mexico and the Southwestern U.S., by the 1970's the breed had been nearly wiped out by hunters and ranchers.
