Brassai: 'Un Costume Pour Deux, Bal Magic City, 1931'

            Magic-City was an amusement park near Pont de l'Alma, two blocks east of the Eiffel Tower, in Paris, France. A large dance hall was located in Magic-City. The venue was known for its "drag balls". Between 1922 and 1939, thousands of men, most costumed and many in extravagant female drag, attended the balls at Magic-City every year. 

Brassaï, the pseudonym of Gyula Halász (1899-1984), was a Hungarian–French photographer who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century.  He remains the most legendary and consummate observer of a now vanished world of Paris after dark, a complete witness of Parisian nightlife in the early 1930s. Through his photography, Brassaï would reveal the nocturnal activities of Parisian society by fully immersing himself and gaining access to an underworld of assorted and eccentric characters. 

This Brassai photograph was seen on display in a survey of the photographers work at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
