             Stegosaurus was a herbivore. It lived in the Jurassic period and inhabited Europe and North America. Its fossils have been found in places such as Utah, Xinjiang (China) and South Dakota. There were three different species of Stegosaurus, but all were relatively similar looking. Among the most famous of all dinosaurs, the Stegosaurus is recognized chiefly for the two rows of armored plates that ran down the length of its spine from its head to the tip of its tail.  
The plates that line the Stegosaurus’ back have inspired much debate as to their function. While they were initially thought to serve as armored protection for the creature’s back, some alternative theories have recently been proposed, ranging from an aesthetic display to heat regulation. 

This life-sized realistic dinosaur model was seen and photographed at the San Mateo County Fair in San Mateo, California.  The exhibit featured over 50 dinosaur models in their natural habitat.
