Chateau Carolands

            The Chateau Carolands in Hillsborough, California, modeled after the French chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, was built by Harriet Pullman Carolan (1869-1956), the daughter of George Pullman (1831-1897), a 19th-century industrialist.  Harriet had purchased the land in 1913, commissioned the French firm of E. Saint-Saens to design the chateau and hired landscape architect Achilles Duchene to plan the garden.  Construction began that same year and ended in 1915 although the mansion was never fully completed.  The chateau finally comprised over a million cubic feet of space in ninety-two rooms.  Equally awesome was the estate itself which had two huge terraces, orchards, and gardens including some 32,000 trees and shrubs and its own internal water system.  

The Carolans moved into the mansion in 1915 but soon discovered many problems.  After seven months, unable to endure the problems any longer, they closed the place and moved East.  No attempt to occupy Carolands was made again until the late 1920's when Harriet returned with a new husband.  But, once again, she gave it up, removed all the furniture and put the entire property up for sale.

Abandoned for many years, the chateau was finally purchased by Charles (President, Franklin-Templeton) and Dr. Ann Johnson for under $6 million.  The Chateau has undergone extensive restoration since 1998 and today stands as one of the most exquisite structures of its kind in the country.  It remains a private single family residence but is opened occasionally by the Johnson' for charity benefits and fundraisers.
