Bolivian 'Mother and Posing Daughter' by Irving Penn

            Portrait of a young mother with her daughter at American fashion photographer Irving Penn's rented studio in Cuzco, Bolivia. Penn (1917-2009) is considered one of the principal photographers of the 20th century. His minimalistic approach to a photoshoot often captured everyone from fashion models to native peoples in front of his unmistakable neutral backgrounds.

Penn traveled to Peru in 1948 on a fashion assignment for Vogue magazine.  After completing his assignment in Peru, he later travelled to Cuzco. In Cuzco, he captured images of indigenous Bolivian country people who had come to the city to a studio he had rented for three days. The people had come to spend a few days shopping in town during the pagan 'Fiesta del Sol' holiday. This began Penn's interest in ethnographic photography. Throughout the three days he stayed in Cuzco, Penn made over 2000 exposures,11 of which were eventually published by Vogue magazine in 1949.
