Larimar slab

            Larimar (a.k.a. "Stefilia's Stone" - I've also heard it called "dolphin stone") is a silicate mineral pectolite that is only found in a tiny are of the Dominican Republic. As you can see by the polished slab and the necklace I posted earlier, it is quite pretty.

Larimar falls into the same category of Tanzanite and is referred to as a "generational gem." Generational = it is expected to be completely mined out within one generation from now. After that, gem material and polished pieces are then referred to as "investment gems" as you can no longer buy new gemstones but the demand is still there which drives up the price. Alexandrite (a purple-blue color-shifting gem) is a recent example of an "investment gem" as you will no longer see large, single gemstones at reasonable prices. In a recent web-search, one 1.99 carats, emerald cut, high quality Alexandrite gem was being sold at $76K.
