Essex Skipper and Dahlia, Bronx, NY - a photo on Flickriver

An Essex Skipper butterfly (Thymelicus lineola) was something that I had never seen before, with its angled front wings that reminded me of the angled vertical stabilizers on modern jet fighters.

The identification of this butterfly is not conclusive, as the Essex Skipper butterflies, also known in the United States as European Skippers, are identified in part by black tips on their antennae. This specimen has orange ones, which indicate that this is a Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris) but for the most of the other specimen photos I have seen do not match that ID. Furthermore, I do not know that this species ranges into North America.

This specimen was flitting around the Dahlias at the Irwin Perennial Garden at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.
