Avila Spain - a photo on Flickriver

Avila Spain

            The medieval city of Avila is in in the province of Castilla-Leon in western Spain about 70 miles from Madrid.  The walled city was founded in the 11th century to protect the Spanish territories from the Moors and is a great example of the Architecture of the era.  In addition to the historic cathedral it has several Romanesque churches and the Convent of Santa Teresa and the monastery of the Encarnacion. The city wall is one of the best preserved of the era. Avila has been designate a world heritage site by UNESCO.
