Crossing Border 2010 - Joris Vanvinckenroye, BASta!

Eén van de verrassingen en wat mij betreft het hoogtepunt op de tweede dag van Crossing Border 2010: Joris Vanvinckenroye met zijn programma BASta!.
Een soloprogramma van een contrabassist is vrij ongebruikelijk, maar wat Vanvinckenroye liet horen en zien, was echt ongelooflijk. De virtuoze musicus verrichtte in één van de kleinere zalen van de Koninklijke Schouwburg grote wonderen met zijn contrabas. Door zichzelf op te nemen, creërde hij loops van baslijnen waarover hij melodieën uitspon en zodoende in z'n eentje de sound van een voltallige band produceerde.
Z'n nummer hadden zo'n groove, dat hij onherroepelijk deed denken aan een andere bassist die zichzelf met loops begeleidde en zowel ritmisch als melodisch een groot talent was: Jaco Pastorius. Crossing Border is a Dutch festival where literature, music, film and the visual arts combine to take central stage. As well as courting the biggest names from the international worlds of literature and music, the festival pays a lot of attention to (as yet) undiscovered artists. One of Crossing Border’s hopes is to highlight new developments in literature and music and their interconnection with other arts. It takes places every year in The Hague. November 2010 brought the eighteenth edition of this festival that has evolved to become one of the foremost international, interdisciplinary literature and music festivals in Europe.
