Slains Castle [1]

            Slains Castle is perched on a cliff top near Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire.

The original castle here was built in the early 17th Century by Francis Hay - the 9th Earl of Erroll. Further alterations and additions were made in 1664 and 1707 before the castle was substantially rebuilt around 1836-7. 
In 1925 the roof was removed to avoid paying tax on the building, and since then Slains Castle has remained a ruin. 

In 2004 outline planning permission was granted to convert/restore the ruin into 35 holiday apartments. In April 2013 the time limit for the original outline planning permission was conditionally extended.

Today (September 2014) the castle remains an uncared for ruin, attracting visitors who explore it at their own risk.
