Fox Sparrow, Passerella iliaca at Loma Prieta in the Santa Cruz Mountains

            I was amazed by the number of fox sparrows running around here. Literally running. It is pretty typical for these birds to be found on the ground, but the hillside covered in low scrub and short trees, with or without leaves this was like an amusement park for them.  I may have photographed over a dozen, though I can't totally discount the possibility that the same 3 or 4 birds were running ahead of me and redeploying in new settings, striking new poses. For 2 or 3 hours the call of the Fox Sparrow became as familiar as...well, the Black Phoebe, or the California Towhee!
