Cold and dark winter evenings turn into exciting light shows in the sky when the northern lights appear. Flapping green curtains spread across the sky, then disappear as quickly as they came. You need to look up!
The green rays come from ALOMAR (Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research), which is an aerial research observatory located on top of the mountain Ramnan (376 m). Active instruments (lidar and radar) send out powerful pulses of electromagnetic radiation (light or microwaves) which are reflected from various components (eg ozone) in the atmosphere.
