Man Ray Girl

            I did not see it coming. She passed like an apparition in the crowd, almost translucent in her black disguise. The dog, trailing behind her, seemed the opposite. Snow white but very male, yet almost sullen on the leash. They made a spectacular pair, no doubt about it.

I grabbed my camera and zoomed in for a shot, but saw them escape in the background. So I chased them. Turning a corner I found them back - like posing for me. I took the shot, checked it and felt relieved. Until I saw her tattoo. My lord! There was an even bigger story. Would I dare to ask?

The dog was my opening line: “Dat is een Deense dog, hè?”

She did not understand Dutch, so I tried in English: “That’s a Great Dane, isn’t it?” She nodded. I could not detect any emotion behind the dark sunglasses. “I know about Great Danes,” I went on, acting like a dog connoisseur. “I had to take care of a couple for a full year.  The male was a spotted harlequin, the female all black. They produced a fine litter with five puppies.  In spite of their size they are very friendly dogs…” She smiled. I mustered all my courage and asked about the tattoo.

“It’s a tribute,” she said, “an homage to Man Ray.” I remembered the picture instantly, but it made me even more curious. Why had she modelled herself as a Man Ray Girl?
“I am a student of photography, “she explained. And no, she did not mind if took her photo, while I kept asking questions.

“So, where do you come from?” “From Argentina” “And how long are you here?” “Six years.” “Still not speaking Dutch?” I teased. “I do,” she said annoyed, “ but I am often too lazy.” She stopped posing. “Will you tell me your name?” I asked. And she did, but I forgot. Shame…
