Gunnerside Gill Mines. - a photo on Flickriver

            A beautiful late Spring walk in the Yorkshire Dales with John Bleakley. 

We had actually set off with the intention to visit the wildflower meadows around Muker in Swaledale. But after an early start we found that the recent dry spell had left the meadows way below their usual colourful best, we didn't even get the cameras out of the bag. We may try again in a couple of weeks.

Not to be deterred, I had a plan B. I had always fancied a walk up the length of the Gunnerside Valley all the way up to the old Blakethwaite Dams. This area had been mined for lead over the Centuries, before mining stopped in the mid 1800's. I knew there were a few ruins and areas to pique a photographers interest. So we drove on to Gunnerside and then had a great 6 hours exploring the area.

Here is a shot of some of the old mining buildings in Gunnerside Gill. Conditions were wonderful with a crisp, cold Northerly air flow keeping us refreshed throughout the walk.
