Indiana History Prints

I began creating a series of Indiana History Prints in 2002. Each print has been based on authentic original antique postcards and other paper items that depict the colossal changes occurring in Indiana and the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was the era when the automobile began to replace the horse and buggy. The interurban system and numerous railroads crisscrossed the state at the time, providing two readily accessible means of transportation and rapid mail service between communities. The telephone was not yet widely available and postcards were a common method of communication, often delivered the day after mailing.

I am entirely responsible for the creation and production of the prints. The prints have been produced with care and each print element looks at least as good as the original. Each print is produced in very small quantities on 100% cotton rag watercolor paper (Hahnemühle Photo Rag®). The paper has a warm tone rather than being bright white, making it particularly suitable for printing historical objects. The prints will look good for decades, but need to be matted, framed and displayed behind glass to protect them from physical and environmental damage.

Print description

I produced the original Indiana’s Presbyterian Churches print in 2003. A single copy of that print was produced. In 2004, I made revisions by changing some items in the print and rearranging others. This is the only print of that revision I ever produced. It is numbered 1 of 1 and is signed. The image size is approximately 15 inches by 20 inches while the overall paper size is 17 inches by 22 inches.

Churches were very important in the lives of Hoosiers early in the 20th century. That, in addition to the striking architecture, made them popular subjects for photographers. The number of Hoosier churches photographed and then printed as postcards from around 1905 to 1915 is astounding and a large number of these depict Presbyterian Churches. The fact that many of the postcards are still around today indicates they must have been popular and sold very well.
