Zutphen is a historic city and municipality in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. It lies on the eastern bank of the river Ijssel, where it is joined by the Berkel river. Zutphen is one of the oldest towns in Holland, dating back to Roman times. It was a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading network in medieval Europe. Zutphen has over 450 national monuments, including churches, courtyards, fortifications and houses. Some of the most notable landmarks are St. Walpurga’s Church, the Wijnhuis Tower, the Berkelpoort and the Librije. Zutphen is also a modern city with a vibrant cultural scene, a variety of shops and restaurants, and a beautiful natural environment. Zutphen is surrounded by castles, country houses and nature reserves, such as Vorden Castle, Hackfort Estate and De Graafschap National Landscape.
