"...built in 1887 as the Jackson Square library by Richard Morris Hunt, a legendary figure of the Beaux-Arts period and the architect of the main entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
It had been a gift to the Free Circulating Library, predecessor of the public library system, from George W. Vanderbilt." --from an article in the New York Times on the building's renovations in the 20th Century.
