Tema - a photo on Flickriver

Tema

            The tema is a traditional shield disc that is used in Temotu Province, Solomon Islands. They are native to the custom of this province and they are made locally. They are made from clam shells (white part) and turtle shell (Dark part) and traditionally were worn as a shield covering the middle of the chest. The jagged top section represents the back bone of a fish and the bottom area respresents a bird.
