KC-135 Aft Fuselage Stiffeners - a photo on Flickriver

Soon after the first KC-135 aircraft were delivered, it became apparent that sound waves from the jet exhaust, including those above the range of human hearing, were causing fatigue in the 7178 aluminum alloy skin of the type's rear fuselage.

The solution was to bond 25 circumferential stiffeners around the affected area. Despite decades of improvements, modifications and specialization, these stiffeners are still found on every C-135 variant, and are usually easy to see.

Boeing KC-135E 57-1507 was originally procured as a KC-135A. Its original J57 turbojets were replaced by TF33 (JT3D) turbofans and pylons taken from retired 707 airliners under the KC-135E program. See:
