C-130D Nose Landing Gear with Ski - a photo on Flickriver

Lockheed C-130D Hercules 57-0493, c/n 182-3200

This photo provides a close look at the ski surrounding the nose landing gear, and the fairing that closed the gap between the fuselage and the ski when the landing gear was retracted. The skis on the main landing gear are visible in the background.

This aircraft is one of 12 Hercules aircraft specially equipped for arctic operations in support of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line.

These aircraft were also used to support exploration and research in Antarctica, until they were replaced by later LC-130H models. 57-0493 was withdrawn to storage in 1985.
