Climbing Heaven and Gazing on the Earth…? —PB Shelley

            The full moon rising at a 4° altitude above the horizon at Platamon, southeast of Mount Olympus, Greece, shot at 18:26 hrs local time on Feb.19, 2019 (at a distance of 356,859 km from earth, azimuth of 75.7° and in front of the Leo constellation). This fullmoon was a super moon, aka “snow moon” or “hunger moon.” Quite low magnification of the lens’s focal length allowed the entire Platamon Castle to be in the frame, despite the lesser details visible on lunar surface. One can compare this photograph with the higher-magnification (and longer-focal length) shot uploaded on Feb.19, 2019 that bears the title: “Pale for Weariness of Climbing Heaven…?—PB Shelley.” In lunar astrophotography is Less More…?!

The Platamōn Castle was built in 1204-1222 AD by Franconian knights (Fränkischer Ritterkreis) of the 4th crusade (led by Rolando Pisscia or Pice of Lombardy). The place now occupied by the castle had earlier constituted the ancient city called Herakleion (Ἡράκλειον) in pre-Christian times, probably built in c.360 BC.

One remembers the interrogative verses written by one of the greatest romantic poets:
