Colombia: indigenous people struggle to protect themselves from an illness called "war" (photo 3/6)

Evelio is a traditional healer belonging to the Jiw tribe. He lives in the Barranco Colorado indigenous territory and is one of the few people in his community who speaks Spanish. He showed us some of his herbal medicines. “Our ancestors did not die of bullets, they died because of diseases. We do not have guns and we do not want the lords of weapons fighting their battles on our reservation,” he explained. The ICRC has been visiting this community for quite some time, and has provided fishing nets and other items needed for people's livelihoods. However, just days before our visit, it had “rained bullets” along the river for three hours. “Now we are afraid to go fishing on the river. We are afraid to venture out to the forest because of mines. Tell me, what are we going to do? What are we going to eat?” Cassava roots and fruit will ensure that people do not die of hunger, but in order to avoid malnourishment the indigenous people need to diversify their diet.
