A plant adapted to shortage of water and scarcity of nutrients. It uses the sea as a method of propagation since the seeds float and resist the salt and can be transported to other beaches.

Description: perennial, bulbous, hairless, herbaceous plant, 30 – 60 cm high. Bulb deeply interred, 5 -8 cm across. Glaucous, plate lineal basal leaves, 2 cm wide by 30cm long. Big flowers, grouped at the end of the stems, 10-15cm across, forming an umbel. Perianth making a narrow tube dilated into a crown composed of twelve white teeth which alternate with 6 stamens, 6 external free tepals up to 6cm long. The fruit is a thick capsule with numerous discoidal seeds.

Habitat: dunes, littoral sands.
