1 Spanish Real Charles III of Spain, 1786

            The Spanish dollar was the coin upon which the original United States dollar was based, and it remained legal tender in the United States until the Coinage Act of 1857. Because it was widely used in Europe, the Americas, and the Far East, it became the first world currency. Front says Charles !!! by the grace of god. Reverse says King of Spain and the Indies. Minted in Mexico City. This coin is i piece of eight or roughly 1/8 of a Spanish Dollar or 12.5 cents. Also know as a bit. That's why "2bits" is a quarter.
