JERASH/roman theatre - a photo on Flickriver

            Gerasa Governorate/Jordan/2019 (Jerash was an ancient city of the Decapolis. Its ruins represent one of the most important and best preserved Roman cities in the Near East.

Jerash was already inhabited during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age (3200 BC - 1200 BC) After the Roman conquest, in the year 63 BC. C., Jerash and its contours were annexed to the Roman province of Syria, and later it was integrated into the Decapolis. In 90 d. C. was incorporated into the province of Arabia, which included the city of Philadelphia (now Amman). The Romans guaranteed peace and security in the area, which allowed its inhabitants to devote their time and energy to economic development and construction. In the second half of the first century, the city of Jerash reached great prosperity. In 106 the emperor Trajan built roads that crossed the provinces, which increased in the years 129-130. Commercial activities arrived were established in the city. 

*A nymphaeum or nymphaion (Ancient Greek: νυμφαῖον), in ancient Greece and Rome, was a monument consecrated to the nymphs, especially those of springs.

These monuments were originally natural grottoes, which tradition assigned as habitations to the local nymphs. They were sometimes so arranged as to furnish a supply of water, as at Pamphylian Side. A nymphaeum dedicated to a local water nymph, Coventina, was built along Hadrian's Wall, in the northernmost reach of the Roman Empire. Subsequently, artificial grottoes took the place of natural ones....)
