War-fair at Aviva Stadium, Dublin (4): A general grouping

A lively protest or picket took place at the Aviva Stadium, Lansdowne Road, Dublin on 6th October 2022 while an arms fair, organised by the Irish government and with Simon Coveney (Minister for Defence, Minister for Foreign Affairs) as a keynote speaker took place inside. Upwards of fifty people attended the protest at lunchtime which was organised by Afri www.afri.ie and backed by other groups such as StoP/Swords to Ploughshares and INNATE.

While protesters objected to the event altogether they also picked up on the term ‘Ecosystem’ used in the title of the conference as highly objectionable for an event about contributing to the war industry which is a major polluter. The full title of the event was "Building the Ecosystem: Identifying connections for collaboration in security, defence and dual-use technologies".

Speaking at the conference, Simon Coveney said “Even though the perception is Ireland doesn’t have a defence industry . . . actually in terms of the contribution that many Irish companies make in regards dual-use goods, we have extraordinary capacity in this country.” (quote from www.irishtimes.com/politics/2022/10/06/conference-hears-c... So Ireland does have an arms industry then – ‘dual use’ equipment used in the war industry is war equipment….
