Northern Ireland: Spying on journalists

They were calling for the Policing Board to hold the PSNI fully to account for spying on journalists to try to find their sources, and for the PSNI to be open and transparent on the matter.

Barry McCaffrey said people will be appalled when the full truth comes out and that there was a legal mechanism for the police to seek sources which is to apply to the courts, and let the judges decide. He said that he and Trevor McBirney had been treated like criminals for seven years.

Ian McGuinness pointed out that journalists protecting their sources is and always has been a key part of the NUJ code of conduct.

Daniel Holder said that if the few cases known about were isolated then this might have been stated by PSNI but it hasn't.

Subsequently: "Amnesty International and the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) have given a “cautious welcome” to a commitment from the Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to the Northern Ireland Policing Board ....[on 7th March 2024].... that he will provide answers within four weeks to their questions on police covert surveillance of journalists and others."
