The Light Fantastic - a photo on Flickriver

            The night sky isn't all about stars and planets; sometimes it's about fireworks and magic!

I was driving home around ten in the evening last night, when suddenly the sky burst into fire! Several cars had pulled over on the side, with people outside taking pictures like crazy, so my next move was to look for a convenient bus stop and follow their example.

These were the most intense and active northern lights that I've seen in decades — possibly not since I was a kid, when we lived up north in Finnmark. They certainly weren't the gently drifting curtains I've seen before here south. They were waving like flags and sails in high winds; there were bright, rapid flashes as by worn-out neon tubes; and fast sweeping blurs of green as if looking out the window of a train speeding through a glowing forest.

I watched it going on for a good twenty minutes, eyes wide open and mouth agape with wonder underneath the kaleidoscope. These images don't do it justice by a long stretch; you'd have to be there.

And all this just because the sun burped in our general direction.
