If you have ever landed in San Francisco International Airport on a clear day, chances are, you have seen the Cargill Salt Ponds. The colors and shapes of these ponds have always mesmerized me. For a while, because of the striking colors, I used to think that they were caused by some kind of sinister chemical waste being dumped into the San Francisco Bay. Then, on reading the delightful book, "Salt," by Mark Kurlansky I found out that the colors were due to the brine shrimp, algae, and other organisms growing in the salt ponds.

The salt ponds have been making salt for almost a century now, but are due to be restored back to wetlands.
