American aerial surveillance photo of the front lines in Okinawa during World War II. The intensity of battle on Okinawa was insane. There were more than 65,000 allied casualties, and more than 100,000 Japanese. The civilian death toll was enormous. If you didn't know it was Okinawa, you'd think it was Hiroshima. The defending Japanese forces used Shuri Castle as their main garrison. It was nearly completely obliterated by shelling from the USS Mississippi.
