Colegiata de Toro, Calvario de marfil y carey (siglo XVII)

[ENG] A Calvary of ivory and tortoiseshell is exhibited in the sacristy of the Toro Collegiate Church (Zamora, Spain). The work is an outstanding piece of eborary art, it is attributed to Claudio Beissonat, an Italian workshop in Naples or Sicily, dated at the end of the 17th century. It represents a Calvary with the ivory sculptures of the Crucified on a cross covered with tortoiseshell, the Sorrowful Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist. The Christ is carved in a single piece of ivory, with the exception of the arms and lateral falls of the cloth of purity. These sculptures sit on a large baroque tabernacle-reliquary, with decorations in ivory on tortoiseshell, and its door is decorated with thirteen ivory medallions, the one in the center represents La Piedad and the surrounding ones with scenes of the Passion. It was stolen by Erik "the Belgian" in 1981 along with other pieces of great value, many not recovered. More photos in the album Toro Collegiate Church, Zamora Spain

[ESP] Un Calvario de marfil y carey se expone en la sacristía de la Colegiata de Toro (Zamora, España). La obra es una pieza destacada del arte eborario, se atribuye a Claudio Beissonat, taller italiano de Nápoles o Sicilia, datada a finales del siglo XVII. Representa un Calvario con las esculturas en marfil del Crucificado sobre cruz recubierta de carey, la Virgen Dolorosa y San Juan Evangelista. El Cristo está tallado en una sola pieza de marfil, a excepción de los brazos y caídas laterales del paño de pureza. Estas esculturas se asientan sobre un gran sagrario-relicario barroco, con decoraciones en marfil sobre carey, y su puerta se decora con trece medallones de marfil, el del centro representa La Piedad y los circundantes con escenas de la Pasión.
