PONT-AVEN - RIVER

Pont-Aven est une commune du département du Finistère dans la région Bretagne en France. Du vieux-breton aven qui signifie rivière, en breton moderne Pont-Aën, dont l'une des sources est située près du village de Pen-Aven. Pont-Aven est surnommée « la cité des peintres » car de nombreux peintres, dont Gauguin, y ont séjourné. En juillet 1864, un jeune peintre américain, Henry Bacon voyage en diligence entre Concarneau et Quimperlé où il se rend pour prendre le train. La diligence fait halte à Pont-Aven qu'il découvre donc par hasard. Il est séduit par ce village dont un dicton ironique disait à l'époque : « Pont-Aven, ville de renom, quatorze moulins, quinze maisons ».

Pont-Aven is a commune in the Finistère department in the Brittany region of France. From old Breton aven which means river, in modern Breton Pont-Aën, one of whose sources is located near the village of Pen-Aven. Pont-Aven is nicknamed "the city of painters" because many painters, including Gauguin, stayed there. In July 1864, a young American painter, Henry Bacon traveled by diligence between Concarneau and Quimperlé where he went to take the train. The stagecoach stopped at Pont-Aven, which he discovered by chance. He was seduced by this village, an ironic saying of which at the time said: “Pont-Aven, renowned town, fourteen mills, fifteen houses”.
