Marzamemi Sicily

            The tonnara of Marzamemi was built by the Arabs. With their hunting party from Sicily in the XI century, the tonnara had a slow but unstoppable decline that lasted up to 1630, year in which the prince of Nicolaci of Villadorata, purchased him from a noble of Palermo and started the reconstruction of it, continued by his/her descendants. In 1752 you/they were built the princely building, the loggia, the church.  The old cottages, already built by the Arabs, you/they were assigned as it resides lasting to the sailors and artisans, recruited near the common vicinoris of Bleak and Syracuse giving origin at the same time to the new Marzamemi. Only example in Sicily of village risen for expansion of a tonnara, Marzamemi preserves intact the eighteenth-century architectural physiognomy: a fist of hovels, harvests around to a sunny plaza, to the summer building of the principles Villadorata, to the small church devoted S. Francesco of Paola to the patron of the people of sea. Connected to this scenery, the ancient stores of the tonnara and the dock (Balata), they end to draw a historical center of great importance, where arcs, stones, crossroads are tied up to legends and histories of ghosts, testimonies of a culture folklorica still long live and vibrating.
