E/506th's field of attack into Foy, January 13th 1945

            In the first week in January the 2nd battalion 506th PIR were moved from their position near the Foy-Bizory road to a position on the other side of the Bastogne-Noville road.  Here they remained in a reserved for a few days.  The were in regimental reserve on the 10th of January.  This is when Easy Company experienced heavy shelling and "Skip" Muck and Alex Penkala were killed when a shell landed in their foxhole.  This position is at the back of this section of woods.

Easy and Item (3rd battalion) Companies were chosen to attack the town of Foy.  The remainder of 2nd battalion remained in reserve.  Early in the morning of the 13th January the forces set off their advance into Foy.
I Company were attacking down the Bastogne-Noville road while Easy Company attacked in the field on the Recogne side of that road.
The ground was covered in snow and it would have been much deeper than that shown in Band of Brothers.
1st platoon of Easy Company were out on the left side of the advance into the town after Dike "fell apart" because he ordered them to circle the village and take it from the rear.  Lieutenant Foley and Johnny Martin chose their route which took them to a line of trees that gave then cover.
I believe these are the trees that 1st platoon used for their advance into the town.

After Dike fell apart, Winters sent Ronald Speirs to relieve the Company and take the attack into the town.  Speirs did so, and also ran through German lines to link up with I Company because if he didn't, they would get cut off.  When he reached I Company he ran all the way back to Easy Company.

The town was secured and the 2nd battalion 506th PIR were put into defensive positions around Foy where they fought back counterattacks.
