Soilsacpe of Shellbluff-Tawcaw complex, 0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded; Sumter County, South Carolina

Soybeans growing on Shellbluff soil in an area of Shellbluff-Tawcaw complex, 0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded from Sumter County, South Carolina. The high silt content of this soil increases the available water capacity, so the soil can supply water to plants for longer periods of time.

The Shellbluff series consists of very deep, well drained or moderately well drained, moderately permeable silty soils that formed in fluvial sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, active, thermic Oxyaquic Dystrudepts

Solum thickness ranges from 20 to more than 40 inches. Depth to bedrock is more than 60 inches. The soil is very strongly acid to slightly acid throughout the profile.

In most pedons, flakes of mica range from none to common in the upper part of the profile, and from few to common in the lower part.

USE AND VEGETATION: Chiefly in woodland. Native vegetation is sweetgum, yellow poplar, oak, and some pine.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: South Carolina and Georgia. The series is of small extent.

The Tawcaw series consist of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils with slow permeability. They are on lower coastal plain flood plains along the lower reaches of rivers which originated in the Piedmont Plateau or Appalachian Mountains.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, kaolinitic, thermic Fluvaquentic Dystrudepts

USE AND VEGETATION:
Where cultivated-- pasture, corn, or hay. Where wooded-- water tolerant hardwoods such as sweetgum, swamp tupelo, black tupelo, beech, elm, ash, cottonwood, water oak, willow oak, and cherrybark oak.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT:
Distribution: South Carolina and Georgia, and possibly Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia
Extent: moderate
