Steam-Powered Whistle Tower at the Buckley Old Engine Show [BOES 9/9]

"Look, Daddy, is that where clouds come from?!”

Just outside the Steam Building is the Whistle Tower. It has 15 large, steam-powered whistles. These aren’t the cute, high-pitched ones like on steam trains that go “toot toot or “tweet tweet.” These are factory whistles made to be heard all over the plant. (Remember “Quitting Time” at the beginning of the intro to The Flintstones?!) They are deep-throated and when they go off “hold on to something solid, cats and kittens, because you'll be vibrating all over” inside and out (as one Web site put it). It is said that on a clear day the whistles can be heard for twenty miles. There are long ropes that go up to the valves on the whistles and they let kids do the pulling.

Taken at the annual Buckley Old Engine Show in Buckley, Michigan (on M-37 south of Traverse City). By the way, this is one of the best run outdoor events I’ve ever attended!
