            The “Mysteries” are 20 artistic representations of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ: 18 groups of full-sized statues, as well as two simulacrums of Mary, who weeps over the body of Christ.  The present statues were created in the 18th century out of cypress wood and cork; each of the twenty groups of statues is sponsored by typical working class professions such as fishermen and blacksmiths, whose representatives are responsible for their general preservation.  The statues of the Mysteries, which stand on platforms, are embellished with silver ornamentation and floral decor and are illuminated in such a way as to exhibit certain facial expressions and movements of sadness and suffering.  On Good Friday, each of the Mysteries is carried on the shoulders of ten men, chosen from that Mystery’s sponsor organization, in a procession through the streets of Trapani, putting on a show of lights, sounds, colors and emotions.  The Procession of the Mysteries in Trapani is the longest religious display in Italy (lasting 24 hours) and among the oldest (repeated year after year for 400 years).

"Celebrations of Big Shoulder-borne Processional Structures" in Italy are on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
