Acacia auriculiformis plantation - a photo on Flickriver

            The Australian tree Acacia auriculiformis is very tolerant to acid soils and so has been used in reforestation projects around the globe. This planting on the island of Yap was established to shade out any regeneration of an incipient infestation of cogon grass, Imperata cylindrica. Cogon is one of the world's worst weeds, but quick action and long-term follow up seems to have eradicated it on Yap before it spread. Trees are 29 months old. The understory is mainly composed of the native false staghorn fern, Dicranopteris linearis.
