Agroforestry farm with māmaki (Pipturus albidus)

An agroforestry system based on growing māmaki (Pipturus albidus), a native Hawaiian plant used to make a tea. Māmaki typically grows in forest gaps, and the farm mimics this environment, with pruned hedges of māmaki growing in gaps in an ‘ōhi‘a (Metrosideros polymorpha) forest. Māmaki shrubs are pruned to facilitate harvest and planted in neat rows. Other crops grown include bananas (Musa sp.) and taro. Some of the ‘ōhi‘a has been affected by Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death, but the farm controls ingress of feral pigs, which helps to limit the severity of the disease.
