The famous inscription on the facade above the columns reads:

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed r[ounds]"

The inscription is borrowed from Herodotus, in his description of the Persian Wars, referring to the efficient couriers of the Persian Empire. It is NOT the motto of the US Postal Service.
