            Lemon migrant butterfly - Catopsilia pomona
During 2021 many butterflies were in our garden. We found they were laying eggs on our non native Cassia fistula or Golden shower tree. We were able to observe the changes in the stages from the eggs to later instar larva. Unfortunately we never found the pupa on the 5m tree but did have a number of new butterflies hatching over their flying time.   

The eggs are long and thin with ridges. When the larva hatches it is tiny and matches exactly the young leaf colour it hatches on. As the larva grow they move up the tree onto bigger leaves that are darker. The larva has a number of stages and grows darker with each stage matching the leaf colour. It sits on the main vein of the leaf which gives it perfect cover. 

We haven't seen them this year. 2024
