snakes live in the walls - a photo on Flickriver

            On the CU campus, old stone walls by the lake and along some walks are riddled with crevices. It turns out that crevices in stone walls are perfect places for snakes to live,  for raccoons and foxes cannot dig them out of stone walls.

I saw the first garter snake yesterday, and two more today. These were the first really warm days this year, and the snakes were tired of being cold and anxious to bask in the sun. 

When I was looking for snakes I found a freshly-shed skin. At a higher resolution you can see that this snake's skin is split behind the head, so this snake will shed very soon.

Garter snakes eat grubs and worms in the soil and leaves, and offer no threat or danger to people. I enjoy seeing and watching them.
