What The Heck?

            Taken in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati, Ohio.

When I see old buildings, I generally look to see if they have been altered over the years and then try to envision what they once looked like and why the changes were made.  When I saw the dark descending line in this wall, I thought of stairs, but, given that each step would be about the size of a brick, I became confused.  I've thought about it for a long time, but really don't have any idea what it once was and why it is in the wall. The wall itself was likely once a common wall between two buildings, but beyond that, I'll probably never figure it out.  The mystery remains.
