Hiroshima Peace Memorial: Children's Peace Monument

This is the Children's Peace Monument in the Hiroshima Peace Museum dedicated to all the children who died in the war. The crane figures are originally dedicated to a Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki who made crane origami while dying of radiation poisoning. It is a popular belief that if you make a thousand paper cranes then you will be granted a wish from the gods. She was able to fold over a thousand before her death due to Lukemia in 1955. To this day a lot of paper cranes are donated on a daily basis to the monument which has special boxes on the side to hold the cranes.
