Hurricane V7479
V7497 is a Hurricane Mk 1, manufactured in August 1940 by Hawker Aircraft Ltd at Kingston. Flown operationally at the very height of the Battle of Britain from the famous fighter station, Kenley, in East London, the aircraft was lost during an operational patrol on 28th September over Sutton in Kent. After an in-depth restoration completed by Hawker Restorations Hurricane V7497 returned to the skies again on 31st August 2018. A thorough test flying process followed and the Hurricane was delivered to its new home at the Imperial War Museum Duxford on 14th September 2018. V7497 will form part of the Battle of Britain exhibition at the museum.

The Hawker Hurricane was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. It was essentially a monoplane derivative of the Hawker Fury biplane powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine as proposed by aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm to enable a rapid step-up to a modern fighter capable to take on the Luftwaffe. The Hurricane entered squadron service in December 1937 and by September 1939, the RAF had 18 Hurricane-equipped squadrons in service making it the backbone of the RAF fighter force at the start of WWII. The Hurricane Mk I was the first production version, with fabric-covered wings, a wooden two-bladed, fixed-pitch propeller (first 435) or three blade two -pitch propeller (as on this PV7479), powered by the 1,030 hp (770 kW) Rolls-Royce Merlin Mk II (first 364) or III engines (like this P7479) and armed with eight .303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns. Produced between 1937 and 1939.
