RF-4E / RF-4E Kai
The RF-4E was an F-4 unarmed reconnaissance version for export only. As with most customers the JASDF RF-4Es were later retrofitted to carry weapons. In total, 149 RF-4Es were built of which 14 were delivered to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. The JASDF later improved its RF-4Es to the same standard as the RF-4EJ Kai which was the recce version of the upgraded F-4EJ Kai air defense fighter. Therefore, the RF-4Es were thereafter known as the RF-4E Kai.

RF-4EJ / RF-4EJ Kai
RF-4EJs were built by refurbishing F-4EJs (the JASDF air defense fighter version) to strengthen the original RF-4E fleet which had been reduced in size due to aircraft being lost in accidents. The RF-4EJ carries a center line reconnaissance equipment pod and has retained the nose M61A1 20mm Vulcan cannon. This makes it easily recognizable as a different aircraft as the RF-4E. RF-4EJ Kai is an upgraded version of the RF-4EJ with improved avionics and an AN/APG-66J radar.

All F-4EJs, RF-4Es and RF-4EJs are now, sadly, withdrawn from service (during 2020).
