            Conservation's cavalry: A mounted patrol of armed wildlife rangers sets off for a week in the bush, in Zakouma National Park, in southern Chad, March 24, 2016. The park had almost 4000 elephants in 2005 and just 443 in 2014, after thousands were poached for their ivory, by nomadic horsemen. At the scene of one massacre in 2008, rangers found 64 carcasses. Today the park uses a combination of aerial surveillance from light aircraft, four teams of cavalry and three rapid reaction infantry units known as Mamba teams to help ward off the threat from poaching. An aeriel survey of the park's large mammals in 2016 showed 483 elephants, which was the first confirmed increase for 10 years.
